Successful self-made lawyer and single term Senator, Edwards made a remarkably successful bid in 2004, though eventually losing out to fellow Senator John Kerry.  His good showing secured him the VP candidate slot, when he was probably just trying to raise his profile enough to be considered as Attorney General in a future Demoractic White House.

His tilt at the top job meant he couldn´t rerun as Senator, and so he has filled his time working with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and as director of Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity.

He is almost certain to run in 2008, but lacks experience and is currently out of the political spotlight, holding no elected office.

On the whole I regard him as a fairly weak candidate at this point in time, experience in the cabinet of a Democrat elected in 2008 would put him in a great position in 2016 when he would be 63 – maybe too old, perhaps his time will never come, right place at the wrong time.
